10 Ways to Get Rid of Mosquitoes Outside

How to Get Rid of Mosquitoes Outside

From candles to specific types of lights, there are several options to repel pests and mosquitoes in your yard. If you are having an outdoor party or hate having pests escape into your home when opening the back door, then this guide on how to get rid of mosquitoes outside is for you.

1. Mosquito Netting

A safe, environmentally-friendly form of mosquito control is mosquito netting. Used all over the world, mosquito nets provide an inexpensive, effective solution to the dangers posed by mosquitoes; they protect humans within the netting. The netting prevents mosquitoes from making direct contact with the humans inside, saving people from experiencing the itchy, painful bites. This form of mosquito control is commonly embraced by eco-friendly people who worry about the adverse effects of insecticides.

2. Mosquito Repellent

An additional form of mosquito control, mosquito repellent is an effective weapon in combating mosquitoes. The repellent must be applied directly to a person's skin and clothing to be effective. Mosquitoes have an aversion to the chemical ingredients found in most commercial repellents. Thus, they generally do not bite or hover around a person wearing mosquito repellent.

3. Mosquito Control Traps

Devices that trap and kill large numbers of mosquitoes can be very beneficial, especially if they live in a location known to be a mosquito breeding habitat (wooded areas near a lake). These devices are known as mosquito control traps. A mosquito control trap can be used to effectively reduce mosquito populations and prevent future breeding.

4. Citronella Candles

While citronella candles aren't as strong as the above options, they can still help, and they also cast a cozy ambience for any party. Citronella candles are made with citronella oils. The smell these candles give off can keep insects at bay. However, they are only effective for the area around the candle.

5. Ultrasonic Devices

If you don't want to spray yourself 24/7 all night with insect repellent, then try getting an electronic, ultrasonic device. You can set it up on a table. When you turn it on, the device emits a high pitch that humans can't hear but insects can. This frequency is supposed to keep insects away. However, there is no scientific proof that they work effectively.

6. Dryer Sheets

This is more of an old wives' tale, but due to the scent, keeping a dryer sheet in your pocket is supposed to repel mosquitoes and insects. Give it a go! You have nothing to lose. See if it works for you. Take a sheet, fold it up and tuck it into your pocket.

7. Lavender Oil

Similar to the citronella candles, insects despise smells of certain essential oils, such as lavender oil. If you are outside with family and friends, you can fill up bowls with lavender oil and keep them around. This is a more natural, chemical-free way to keep yourselves free of bug bites. Or, if you have a lavender essential oil roller, you can pass that around and have everyone apply it.

8. Neem Oil

Neem oil is often used on houseplants and outdoor plants as a natural insect repellent. Usually bugs are attracted to plants, so if you have them in your yard, spray the leaves with neem oil. All you have to do is take a spray bottle, fill it with water, add about four drops of neem oil, shake it up and then spray!

9. Egg Cartons

When using this option, please make sure you are doing it in a fire-safe location. It is recommended to take empty egg cartons and ignite them only to put the flame out. Then, let them smolder. The smoke will rise into the air. Mosquitoes are supposed to hate this smell, so it might keep them away from your yard.

10. Garlic Water

If you are looking for a cheaper option, then try this! In a spray bottle, mix water with garlic (garlic powder may be an easier option for this compared to minced). Then, spray the garlic water mixture on any outdoor lights you have. The smell of garlic might keep the mosquitoes away.

Which Option Will You Choose?

Having a variety of options, including natural, at-home, chemical-free remedies is important, as spray-on insect repellent may be harmful for your skin. If you are under a porch or gazebo, then a mosquito net will be your best bet. If you are more eco-friendly and opt for cleaner options, then try the essential oils. So, that is how you can get rid of mosquitoes outside. Now the choice is up to you.
