What to Know When Renting a Dumpster

Get a Dumpster That Fits the Job

When you begin a large construction, remodel, or clean-up project, there is typically a large amount of waste to get rid of. Renting a dumpster is a great option to help you get rid of unwanted trash and waste. Dumpster sizes and types vary, so make sure you choose the one that is best suited for the project you need it for.

Sometimes people think of dumpsters as only being utilized by businesses and in commercial settings, but dumpsters can be rented for both commercial and residential use. Whether you are remodeling an entire office building or just doing some extensive yard work, there is a dumpster that is perfect for the job.

Some cities require you to obtain certain permits before you can rent a dumpster and have it sitting in front of your home or business, so it’s important to make sure you check into that before renting a dumpster.

Types of Dumpsters

You can rent different dumpster types based on the project you need it for. There are some rules and restrictions on what you can and cannot dispose of in a dumpster, so review these rules before just throwing everything all into one dumpster. Putting restricted items into a dumpster can cost you more money.

The different types of dumpsters include: construction (commercial and residential), general debris, roofing, concrete and dirt, and yard waste. If you are cleaning out your home and throwing away old junk, you can’t start throwing in concrete and bricks on top of it. These are two different categories and must be put into different dumpsters.

Sizes of Dumpsters

Dumpsters come in many different sizes to accommodate any project you may be tackling. Dumpster sizes are measured in cubic yards. The most common sizes to choose from are 10 yard, 15 yard, 20 yard, 30 yard, and 40 yard dumpsters. It can be difficult to determine how large of a dumpster you may need if you haven’t started your project yet.

The following guidelines can assist you in getting the right size dumpster for your needs.

10 Yard Dumpster

The size of a 10 yard dumpster is approximately 14 feet long, 3.5 feet tall, and 7.5 feet wide. It would take about three truckloads of debris to fill up a 10 yard dumpster. This size dumpster would be great for small home remodel projects.

15 Yard Dumpster

A 15 yard dumpster measures approximately 16 feet long, 4.5 feet tall, and 7.5 feet wide. This size dumpster holds approximately four and a half truckloads of debris.

20 Yard Dumpster

A 20 yard dumpster measures 22 feet long, 4.5 feet tall, and 7.5 feet wide. This is approximately six truckloads of debris.

30 Yard Dumpster

The measurements on a 30 yard dumpster are approximately 22 feet long, 6 feet tall, and 7.5 feet wide. You can fit around nine truckloads of debris in a 30 cubic yard dumpster.

40 Yard Dumpster

You will most often find larger dumpsters on commercial construction job sites. The 40 yard dumpster measures approximately 22 feet long, 8 feet tall, and 7.5 feet wide. This size dumpster can hold around 12 truckloads of debris.

If you have never rented a dumpster, talk to the dumpster rental company about your project before you begin and they can help direct you to the most beneficial size for you. You want to be cautious of over-filling your dumpster. Companies charge large overage fees if they come to collect your dumpster and it is over flowing or too full.

If you are unsure of what size you may need, it’s always best to go up a size. In the middle of a remodel project, you would rather have too much room in the dumpster than not enough.

Preparing for a Dumpster Delivery

Before you order and rent a dumpster, you need to prepare and plan for a few things. You will need to make sure you have a location for the dumpster to be dropped off. Before you rent a dumpster, know what the dimensions are so that you know where you will put it. You should also shop around to ensure you are getting the best deal.

Most dumpster rental companies rent out their dumpsters by the week, so plan for how long you think you will need the dumpster before you rent it to avoid paying expensive fees for keeping it too long.

Benefits of Renting a Dumpster

When you have a lot more trash than normal, renting a dumpster temporarily may be the best option for you. You don’t want your trash to pile up while you are trying to get rid of it. When you rent a dumpster, you are keeping trash and waste off of the streets. Trash that does not get disposed of properly will end up littering the streets and bodies of water that surround us.

Renting a dumpster can also bring you peace of mind when you are beginning a large project. You will know that you have a place to get rid of your trash and someone else will come by to take care of dumping it for you. Having a dumpster either at a residential or commercial location keeps your job site cleaner and more organized.

Trash collects and piles up quickly. This won’t happen to you if you have a designated dumpster for all waste and trash.
